Action
The amount of coins that is wagered in a deal.
Bank
A row of video poker consoles is called a bank.
Bankroll
A gambler's total gambling budget. It also refers to the money he or she brings at a single playing session.
Carousel
A group of several rows of video poker machines, which may or may not be hooked up to a single progressive jackpot.
Cash Back
A cash rebate that a player receives as part of a players' club (usually slot machine or video poker).
Change Person
The casino employee who looks after a video poker machine and refills it with coins so it can pay out.
Coin In
The total amount of money wagered into a video poker machine. It is one of the factors used by casinos to measure a player's rewards or comps.
Comps
A slang video poker term short for complimentary. It refers to free goods and services that a gambler can avail of as a loyal customer.
Cycle
A somewhat misleading term referring to the average number of hands it takes to get a specific hand. Usually used to time the appearance of the jackpot hand, typically the royal flush. A royal flush hits on average every 40,000 hands. There is no certainty however, that a jackpot will hit after that many hands.
Drawing Hand
A term for a poker hand that needs one or more cards to improve itself, e.g. a two pair may be considered a drawing hand if you are aiming at a full house.
Expected Return
The amount of gain or loss that one gets over the long term from a video poker machine. To get the expected return, multiply the house edge by the total money wagered per hour.
Expert Play
Playing video poker by following correct, math-based strategies for each possible hand dealt. Similar to playing with basic strategy in blackjack.
Full Pay
A video poker machine is full pay when it offers the highest possible payoffs for the type of game it carries. For example, a 9/6 table is the full pay version of the game Jacks or Better.
Hopper
The part of a video poker machine that houses the coins released upon payout.
House Edge
This term refers to the casino's advantage in every game. Each game is configured to give the house a long term advantage; otherwise it would be put out of business by successful gamblers.
