Poker Psychology to Observe at a Table
Always remember that poker is mostly about psychology. This is especially true of Texas Holdem variants - no-limit most especially. Who gets to influence or control what the opponent thinks wins. So we have to have a good poker psychology working each hand.
Some players, even experienced ones, get a habit of transferring tables once they think they've raked in enough winnings at one. The idea behind this poker psychology is that once they've won enough and showed all the poker tricks up their sleeves their poker tells will show and the tables would soon turn against them. It's like the principle of diminishing returns - after a winning peak there's no other way but to start sliding down.
But we have to counter that poor poker psychology by what really happens at a table. When we play low stakes poker games we should avoid leaving the table when we're on a winning streak. We should strike while the iron is red-hot to form anything useful. When opponents begin to lose to us, their tendency is to lose until the game ends. And this is especially true online.
Among the powerful elements of a good poker psychology is taking advantage of an emotional opponent. When a player goes on a tilt that player is sure to get beat if the emotions are uncontrolled. And when we're online and winning opponents tend to want to catch up with us and play loosely and bet aggressively. Remember, online low stake games are frequented by loose players. The professional ones are often in high stake games.
As losing players on tilt challenge our bets with calls and raises the pots get bigger and we become more in control - players on tilt can never take control of any game. The more emotional and out of control they are the more our poker psychology becomes effective. Perhaps now and then we do some bluffs to put them more out of step with our play. Even let them win small pots now and then.
Just remember fishing: as long as the fish bite we catch a lot. It's foolish to transfer to another fishing site because the present one is full of biting fish. Losers just give up when they go bankrupt. So it's wise to stay and use good poker psychology while profits are pouring in.
So when we're winning, stay at the table. Use poker psychology against bad players on tilt. They'll keep us supplied with hefty pots to win.
