Gameplay Sequence in Poker

In poker, an initial forced bet gets the ball rolling. Afterwards, the cards are dealt, and actions proceed clockwise from the first player; which is to say, to the left. Usually, the person assigned to deal the cards rotates among the players. The designated dealer is usually given a token or "dealer" button called the "buck." This buck rotates as the role designated for the dealer also rotates. This could be the origin of the term, "passing the buck." In casinos, a croupier or casino employee deals the cards, but a nominal dealer is still assigned. A token is still rotated among the players; this token is frequently a white disk made out of plastic. This is done so that the betting order of a poker hand is determined.

Before the cards are dealt, the dealer -whether this person may be a casino employee, or simply one of the players- usually washes the cards to make sure that any consistency in the cards' arrangement can be removed. Afterwards, the cards are shuffled conventionally, and the player to the dealer's right cuts the cards. After this is done, the cards are dealt out.

Depending on the poker variant being played, the hands being dealt may or may not be complete, and extra cards may or may not be dealt as well. In draw poker, for example, while a complete hand is dealt to the players, after a round of betting, players can opt to change or develop their hands by having new cards dealt to them, and discarding old cards. There is usually a limited number of betting rounds in a particular poker game, but this varies according to what poker game it is. The final round in a poker game is called the "showdown." If there is more than one player left in contention, these remaining players have to reveal their hands. Depending on the variant of poker being played, the winning hand is usually either the high hand or the low hand. Sometimes, the pot in a game of poker can be split between the high and low hands.

During the game, players are required to put bets in the pot that are at least equal to the amount of money that the previous player had put in. Doing this is called a "call." If a player should opt to make it more challenging for their opponents by putting in a larger amount of money than the previous player did, this is called "raising." On the other hand, if a player no longer wishes to make any more bets for that hand, the player "folds."
